Pansies and their viola cousins have become the most popular
cool weather annuals over the years as commercial property managers began
planting them more than a decade ago to add color and landscaping life
to their properties during the fall, winter, and spring months. Now
everyday gardeners load up on pansies and violas to bring a much needed
color burst to their gardens during the dreary cold weather months.
Because of their compact, low growing habit pansies are an ideal choice
for borders, containers, and rock gardens as well as mass plantings.
Although delicate, pansies are surprisingly hardy and perform well in even
the coldest of winters. Even though pansies are not fussy plants,
they will grow best in a loose, rich soil with a slightly acid PH.
They flower best in full sun and will stretch if planted in full shade.
Their large flowers in a wide variety of colors will brighten up an empty
spot on your patio or in the garden and will complement flowering perennials
during the spring months. |
